WHY DO WOMEN USE THEM?
The clit pump works on the same concept as the male versions. It’s a device that is placed over the clit and a hand pump creates a vacuum that causes the clit (or entire labia) to swell.
The increase in blood flow to the area helps to increase the sensitivity for foreplay or sex.
WHAT TYPES OF PUMPS ARE THERE?
There are TWO types – medical and commercial.
- The medical versions are better quality and you can only get your hands on one if your doctor gives you a prescription.
- The commercial versions are sold in nearly all sex shops. They’re of lesser quality and don’t have the “cut off” safeguards the medical ones have.
Then there are a few different designs…
NO FRILLS SIMPLE – They are either a cup (that looks like something you would breathe out of while in a hospital or ambulance) or a cylinder. They are connected with a flexible tube and attached to a hand pump. Some have a function that allows you to release air, so you can pump more in and mimic a sucking sensation.
TEXTURED – The cup designs will sometimes have ridges, bumps, or other textures inside. They add another layer of sensations and stimulation when you’re pumping.
VIBRATING PUMPS – These pumps will have a vibrator as part of the design. It adds higher levels of stimulation.
PENIS PUMPS VS. PUSSY PUMPS
When it comes to the medical ones, they are very similar. They are both used to treat various types of sexual or physical dysfunctions that prevent you from sexual pleasure. Men use pumps to treat erectile dysfunction. Women can use them to help with things like anorgasmia.
When it comes to the commercial products, there is a HUGE difference. Sellers tap into male insecurity about penis size and market pumps as a solution. They promise several additional inches and hint that it will be permanent (when it’s not).
Female pumps aren’t marketed as aggressively, but they are found in a lot of porn. And while there are users who pump because they like the look of their engorged genitals, most women use them to have better orgasms.
So, in short, men buy them because they want to be big. Women buy them because they want to feel more.
THE DANGERS OF PUMPING
Your doctor will always tell you how to use the medical pumps in a safe way. However, the commercial pumps might come with “manufacture’s instructions”, but that’s it – and those instructions aren’t necessarily accurate when it comes to safety.
Because…
There are no “cut off” features in the cheap ones, and you can pump so hard you can damage the tissue. Some men have even popped a penis vein. Some women have pumped so hard they were swollen for days.
HOW DO YOU USE THEM?
I don’t usually recommend any commercial pumps (I’m 100% supportive of the medical ones), but there are those that are going to go ahead anyway. So, at least let’s look at ways to be safe.
- Shaving or trimming is important – Copious pubic hair won’t let you get a good connection.
- Add some baby oil or lube around the rim – It helps make things stick.
- Get in the right position – Spread your legs wide and lift your pelvis until you can get a good connection.
- Pump carefully and slowly – Take your time, rushing can lead to problems. Beginners also shouldn’t pump too much.
- Pain is NEVER good – You might feel some “swelling” sensation (and whatever sensations the textures or vibrators give you), but if you experience any pain, you should stop! And no, “good pain” isn’t a good thing either.
- Don’t keep it on for too long – You’ll have to let the vacuum sit for a little, but that’s it. The point is to take it off after you’re engorged so you can go to foreplay or other activities.
- Swollen doesn’t mean “ready” – Simply having a larger clit, doesn’t mean you’re aroused. Being WET means you’re aroused. If you want to have intercourse, but aren’t wet, you’ll still need to apply lube.
My suggestion, if you want to get into this kind of play, I would speak to your doctor first (even if it’s not related to a medical problem).
