And then you spot some birds playing with a dildo.
Yep.
That’s what happened when Jennifer Warner, a conservation photographer, visited the Children’s Pool in La Jolla, California. The plan was to go to the beach and take pictures of the young seals (the beach is closed for a few months so the animals can give birth safely; despite a back-and-forth between residents’ complaints to keep it open all year and environmentalists wanting it off-limits for nearly half the year).

The seals aren’t the only ones that like the shore – since there are no humans, many birds also find it a good place to congregate.
All was going well when Warner noticed a cluster of noisy seagulls fighting over what appeared to be a bit of plastic. Being a conservationist, and working for organizations such as Cheetah Conservation Fund and Shoot’em with a Camera, she was understandably angry.
But when she zoomed in, she saw it wasn’t just any piece of plastic…

“Before realizing what the object was, I was annoyed and mad, because plastic pollution is a real serious problem, and as a conservation photographer I’m documenting human impacts on wildlife. But when I realized what it was, while the other emotions still existed, you can’t help but find humor in it,” Warner told Gizmodo.

Despite the annoying (yet funny) image, the photos she took ended up going viral – and in a way, brought better awareness to the cause.
