Sensory deprivation, aka sensory play, isn’t as intimidating as it sounds.
As long as it involves taking away at least one of the senses, it counts – things like blindfolds, earplugs, and all the way to mummification.
And the reasons people like it are quite simple. If you take away one sense, the others become heightened. This, in turn, can make your intimate encounters a different, exciting experience.
How can you dip into sensory play?
TAKE AWAY THEIR SIGHT
This is one of the easiest. You don’t even need to buy a blindfold – ties, scarves, anything you have lying around the house. Even a pitch dark room will do. If you have a bit more money to spend, there are full face masks that can take things to the next level.
For those who are hesitant to have 100% of their sight taken away, you can take baby steps by choosing a sheer fabric, wearing a mask with small eyeholes, or horse blinders that take away peripheral vision.
TAKE AWAY THEIR HEARING
Earplugs or noise canceling headphones are great for taking away the ability to hear. However, there’s more you can do in this department…
Playing loud music will also work – it’s even better if you use the same song (or style of song) over and over in order to train the mind to expect (and get excited about) your play time.
Another aspect is playing disjointed or discordant music – jarring electronic music with no rhyme, reason, or harmony is a great way to bring on mental confusion or irritation.
TAKE AWAY THEIR TASTE OR SMELL
I’ve coupled these together because they affect each other (if you’ve had a bad cold, you know what I’m talking about).
Nose plugs or clothespins to the nose takes care of smell. Taking away taste, however, is a little trickier.
Aside from plugging the nose, you would have to overwhelm the taste buds with something powerful – like onions, hot sauce, sour candies etc.
TAKE AWAY THEIR TOUCH
Aside from a bath in lidocaine (joking, don’t do that), you can’t take away the sense of touch the way you would take away the others.
The best approach is to put a barrier over the skin – liquid latex, plastic wrap, mummification suits etc.
I have heard of numbing with ice baths or numbing creams, but it sounds a bit too risky for me, and I wouldn’t recommend it.
WHAT DO YOU AFTER?
So, you have someone tied up and sensory deprived. What do you do next?
Well, the world is your playground!
Since they will be focusing on their other senses, work with that.
PLAY WITH SOUND – Music, whispers, do something around the room and make them wonder what’s going on.
PLAY WITH TOUCH – Tickle, pinch, flog, use ice cubes, try warming cream, bite, fuck, caress, hug, use a sex toy, add some nipple clamps etc.

PLAY WITH SMELL/TASTE – Play a guessing game and give rewards for correct answers, feed them different tasting food or combination (or get them to eat it off you),
DANGERS
With all kinds of kink, you and your partner have to be aware of the risks, especially with full sensory deprivation.
- Mummifications suits can make someone overheat
- Blood pressure could run high or low
- Someone might have a latex allergy (if you’re using a latex suit)
- Then there are those who are prone to seizures or other conditions
Discuss any health issues beforehand and either take precautions or avoid that specific kind of sensory deprivation.
TRUST ISSUES
- Any kind of BDSM needs to follow the SSSC rule – Safe, Sane, Sober, Consensual.
- Make sure you communicate all your needs and fears before you break out the blindfold.
- It’s also a good idea to have a SAFE WORD to immediately stop play if you’re feeling unsafe or uncomfortable.
