The Big Guide to Ball Gags – Tips, Product Reviews, and Warnings

Ball gags are a fun yet simple additions to your sex-chest.

But, before you go shopping, let’s look at everything you need to know to make a smart purchase and not waste your money on something that won’t fit or falls apart.

TYPES OF GAGS

In this particular article, we will be looking at just BALL gags – a rubber or silicone ball that goes in the mouth (behind the teeth) and is held in place by a strap.

However, you can also find things like: Bits, breathable gags, dildos, ring, funnels, inflatables, muzzles, penis gags, medical, and over the mouth.

THE RIGHT BALLS FOR THE RIGHT LEVEL

BEGINNER – should have smaller balls, easily adjusted, made from a softer material like silicone, and be more comfortable – all without opening the mouth or jaw too much.

INTERMEDIATE – the gag pieces get bigger, materials are harder or more durable for long periods of play with a buckle instead of a slip fastener – jaws will open a little more as well as giving more “muffle”.

ADVANCED – the mouth bits are made from harder materials like metal or leather, and have a buckle or a lock – the mouth bits are large for maximum opening of the mouth and the most muffle.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT BALL GAG

First, decide on the material.

Silicone is the most common one. Then there is ABS plastic, metal, leather, and faux leather.

There are rubber and latex harness options, but rubber is porous and latex can tear easily, so I would advise against them.

Next, decide on the size:

  • Extra small – around 1.0 to 1.25 (inches)
  • Small – around 1.5
  • Medium – around 1.67 to 1.75
  • Large – around 2.0
  • Extra Large – 2.5 to 3.0

IMPORTANT: Choose a size that fits the wearer’s mouth with a comfortable stretch. Their experience level also should be a factor.

Also, some companies give the diameter of the ball while others give the circumference. It’s an annoying pain in the ass, but you can solve it with some simple math.

  • It’s easiest if they tell you the diameter because that’s the number that will tell you if it’s going to fit in your mouth.
  • If you only know the circumference, just divide that number by Pi = 3.14  So, if you see 5.2 inches, it will be around a 1.6-inch ball.

CLEANING YOUR BALL GAG

Cleaning a gag after every use is just as important as any dildo or butt plug. It’s bodily fluids after all, and oral infections are still a possibility.

  • Use warm water and soap (antibacterial optional)
  • Careful around holes, ridges, dips, or any difficult to clean areas
  • Dry and store in a silk bag, clean box, or proper storage container
  • Disinfect once in a while (hot water, 10% bleach solution etc)

WARNING: Not all materials can be disinfected. Leather and rubber are porous and will never be 100% clean. If you share your toys, this could mean transmissions of STIs.

PLAYING WITH BALLS? BE SAFE!!

  • Make sure the gag is made from safe materials
  • Have medical scissors just in case
  • Have a non-verbal safety word
  • Have a time limit for a beginner
  • Make sure they don’t have a cold or sinus issues
  • Make sure they don’t have an upset stomach
  • Make sure they can still breathe
  • Never leave them alone while wearing the gag
  • Never wear a gag for too long (20min max for beginners)

FACT: Most gags cause uncontrollable drooling.

One more safety tip … sort of…

For some reason, bath bombs are recommended alongside gags. Which is stupid and up there with Tide Pods. Never use them as gags (even if they’re wrapped in plastic).

TIPS FOR BUYING BALL GAGS

I’ve noticed a disappointing similarity between so many sites – they are abysmal with talking about the measurements, especially with the more complicated muzzle/face harness + gag combos.

They’ll usually disclose the ball diameter and how big the strap can go.

But that’s about it.

Some sites also don’t take enough photos to show the product from all angles – one site is particularly bad for this.

There will be a great selection and enticing deals, but make sure you get ALL the details and measurements from a customer service agent before you buy.

BALL GAG REVIEWS

JAWBREAKER GAG IN PINK ($15)

Yes, this is the actual candy.

I love the ideas because it’s great for serious play or even a gag gift.

My problems: first, they don’t specify the size of the jawbreaker and second, when the candy is gone, you are just left with the strap. Unless you repurpose it into a collar or wrap-bracelet, you’re paying more for the novelty.

I’d buy this if I had some extra scratch (and it was on sale) and mostly for fun.

ELASTIC BALL GAG IN BLACK ($25)

I’m usually pretty hard on things like dildos and other such sex toys. But unless it’s made from an unsafe material (or ridiculously priced), it’s pretty hard to disappoint me.

But I was disappointed with this one.

The elastic strap isn’t a bad idea, but the ONE PIECE strap is just stupid. There’s little to no adjustment and no way of knowing how small (or wide) it can go. My worry is it will either be too loose or too tight. Also, the edges of the elastic will not be comfortable in the corners of the mouth.

And all this for $25?! No way.

VERDICT: Level = Beginner, Recommendation = 1, Strictness = 1

BONDAGE BOUTIQUE BALL GAG ($6)

Even though this one has a strap that might dig into the corners of the mouth (it’s quite thin (so I’m hoping not).

It’s perfect for a beginner ball. The silicone, easily adjustable infinity strap, and cheap price make it a steal.

VERDICT: Level = Beginner, Recommendation = 4, Strictness = 1

BONDAGE SILICONE BALL GAG ($19)

The selling point for me is the side parts that come out of the ball. It looks quite comfortable. Plus, it’s squishy silicone, which is good.

If the previous model is a bit too simple for you, this would be a good step up.

VERDICT: Level = Beginner * Recommendation = 5 * Strictness = 2

GAG AND WRIST RESTRAINTS ($40)

Gags aren’t really Spenser’s specialty, but I do like the restraint combo.

I wouldn’t recommend it for beginners though, especially since the mouthpiece is 2.5 inches.

The clasp attachment and Velcro tie are great for safety. The price also varies GREATLY from site to site, so go deal hunting if you want it.

VERDICT: Level = Advanced, Recommendation = 4, Strictness = 5

CANDY APPLE TRAINER

I’ve been somewhat neglecting the advanced users so far.

Something like this (with the restraint plus gag combo) is perfect for advanced/trained subs who can open WIDE.

I am concerned if the neck brace is really a one size fits all sort of deal though. Before buying, I would contact the seller and get some measurements.

VERDICT: Level = Advanced, Recommendation = 4, Strictness = 5

SILICONE GAG WITH NIPPE CLAMPS

I love the combo idea. It makes for some interesting play with the nipple clamps. The clamps themselves are the “easily adjustable kind” , so you can have any pressure level you want (I have a similar pair and find them quite comfortable).

What I don’t like is they give you every other measurement besides the length of the chains. This could be an issue if you’ve got bigger boobs because your chin will dip down and possibly strain your neck (unless you like the tug).

OR they might be too long and do nothing but look pretty sitting there. There’s also no option for adjusting chain length.

I’d recommend asking whatever seller for additional details before you purchase. Other examples:  (link1) (link2)

HEARTBEAT SILICONE GAG

I am wondering if it will stay “in place” during play (particularly with the narrow point at the bottom of the heart).

It’s wide enough to bite down on, so I guess that helps. It’s simple and cute – good for kinky Valentine ’s Day play.

VERDICT: Level = Beginne,r Recommendation = 3, Strictness = 3

GETTING LIPPY TRAINER ($67)

On one hand, the face harness looks super fun. On the other, many people have complained about things not fitting properly.

This particular problem isn’t just with this model – rather similar styles from several companies. It’s especially frustrating when you’re not shown the back.

There are many of her face (and tits and blank, submissive stares into the camera), but nothing that’s showing me the buckles, the product on its own etc. – or any accompanying measurements other than “fits up to…”

Even if I want with a similar harness/gag for less, I’d still be more than hesitant to hand over any cash – especially since the write up sounds more like a bad kink novel than a product description.

VERDICT: Level = Advanced,  Recommendation = 2,  Strictness = 5

NOTE: If they did a better job handing over more details (and lose the excessive “sexy talk”) I would have bumped the recommendation up to a 4/5.

6 ONLINE STORES YOU CAN TRY

#6. Spencer’s sells more in the way of “box set” sex brands (like the cheap “Fetish” line you see everywhere). It’s more of a store that sells everything and decided to have a naughty section at the last minute. But there is stuff there if you want to compare prices.

#5. Lovehoney offers a standard assortment. However, it’s not so much their specialty so there limited variety. They were one of the few that sold a non-custom latex muzzle mask.

#4. PinkCherry has an okay collection and is a tiny bit cheaper than other places.

#3. UrberKinky – Has a more limited selection, but you’ll be able to find more special models compared to competitors.

#2. The Sub Shop – there are far more muzzle and mask gag choices on top of their already impressive selection, although they do lump their medical models in with their “unique” gags.

#1. (Top Pick) Extreme Restraints – has one of the biggest collections at very reasonable prices. The only downside? It’s lacking in the more specialized options like muzzles and funnels.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Well, there you have it – the wonderful world of ball gags.
